On the occasion of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Documenta and the World Jewish Congress sent letters to more than twenty cities and municipalities in the Republic of Croatia in which streets are named after members or officials of the Ustasha movement, asking when they plan to consider renaming them. Paying tribute to Ustasha officials can be understood as glorifying the Ustasha regime, not acknowledging the suffering of all victims of Ustasha terror and disputing crimes against Jews, Serbs, Roma and political dissidents during World War II. The World Jewish Congress conducted a research on the names of streets and squares in the territory of the Republic of Croatia entitled “Examples of Historical Revisionism in Croatia”, the results of which we drew attention to. During the year, we will repeat the request and inform the public about the response.

It is completely inappropriate to pay tribute to members of the Ustasha movement. We are all obliged to oppose the glorification of the regime of the Independent State of Croatia bearing in mind the original basis of the Constitution which establishes the foundation of Croatian statehood “as opposed to the proclamation of the Independent State of Croatia (1941.) in the decisions of the State Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Croatia (1943.)“.
