Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to invite you to a workshop titled “Conflict Textiles”, where curator Roberta Bačić will present a collection in which the first arpilleras were made by women while searching for their family members, during the dictatorship of Pinochet in Chile. The workshop will be held at Gallery Principij in Rijeka, Ulica pod Voltun 4, on Wednesday 17 April 2019, from 10:00 – 12:00. The event is organized by Documenta in cooperation with City of Rijeka as a European Capital of Culture, and Gallery Principij. Later that day, from 14:00 – 16:00, another workshop will be held for students, at the Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka. The workshop is organized in cooperation with City of Rijeka as a European Capital of Culture and the Department of Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy in Rijeka. The whole program is supported by the EVZ Foundation.

The workshop is held before the two related exhibitions in the Gallery Principij which will be open in the autumn: the first exhibition is the “Conflict Textiles” collection from the University of Ulster, which deals with serious violations of human rights and was created by women during the dictatorship of Pinochet in Chile and later by women of Spain, Brazil, England, Ireland, Germany, Zimbabwe, Colombia, Canada, New Zealand and Ecuador. The other exhibition “The guardians of the spoon” is linking art photography and memories of the survivors of the fascist camp Kampor on Rab, the deadliest among the hundreds of camps established by fascist Italy in today’s Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Ethiopia, Croatia, Italy, Macedonia and Serbia.
