New artwork – Andreja Kulunčić, ‘You Betrayed the Party Just When You Should Have Helped It’

The document presents a comprehensive overview of Andreja Kulunčić’s powerful artistic projects centered on themes of memory, political repression, and collective healing. At its core is the exhibition You Betrayed the Party Just When You Should Have Helped It, which critically revisits the untold stories of over 850 women imprisoned in Yugoslav political camps on Goli Otok and Sveti Grgur. Through multimedia installations, participatory art, and anti-monumental strategies, Kulunčić examines the complexities of loyalty, betrayal, and historical erasure.
This publication not only documents the exhibitions in Bucharest and Zagreb but also contextualizes them within Kulunčić’s broader practice of socially engaged art. It highlights her dedication to fostering dialogue, collective memory, and active public participation in addressing suppressed traumas. Co-funded by the European Union and produced by Documenta – Center for Dealing with the Past, the document reflects a collaborative effort to confront historical injustices and advocate for social transformation through art.
The new artwork featured in the exhibition Činiti svijet boljim mjestom (Making the World a Better Place) by Andreja Kulunčić is a poignant sculptural piece that deepens her investigation into trauma, memory, and the erasure of women’s experiences in political history. It is part of the broader project You Betrayed the Party Just When You Should Have Helped It, which focuses on the neglected stories of over 850 women detained in the political prison camps of Goli Otok and Sveti Grgur during the Yugoslav era.
