Regional seminar for educators / Study trip Sarajevo – Mostar – Dubrovnik, June 23rd – 27th, 2017
The educational cycle on the topic of targeting cultural heritage and destroying religious and cultural objects during war conflicts represents a significant part of the “Targeting History and Memory” project.
The programme was carried out in cooperation with EUROCLIO, the European Association of History Educators, and it was made of three units: professional and expert guidance at the exhibition “Targeting Monuments – Targeting History and Memory” in Sarajevo, the regional seminar that was held at the Historical Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the 24th and 25th of June 2017, and the study trip that started on June 25th in Sarajevo and which also included Mostar and Dubrovnik.
The objective of these activities was to enable history educators to find and obtain appropriate models of transferring knowledge connected to the importance and the purport of cultural and religious heritage in social communities and the usage of heritage in the context of a significant identity element in war conflicts. The educators were assisted in this by the expert guidance of Goran Đurđević, a history professor and Documenta’s associate. There were 30 participants at the seminar, all of which were history teachers and educators from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. They came from different cities and towns from all three countries (Zagreb, Osijek, Rijeka, and Pula in Croatia, Beograd, Kragujevac, and Užice in Serbia, and Sarajevo, Tuzla, Bihać, Doboj, Vitez, and Banja Luka in Bosnia and Herzegovina).
The expert guidance during the study trip was made of and provided by: Amra Ćusto in Sarajevo, Amer Bahtijar and Lejla Gačanica in Mostar, and Marko Sjekavica in Dubrovnik.
The study trip included a visit to the following sites and locations: SARAJEVO – The City Hall, Ferhadija Street, Markale Market, Eternal Flame, Srebrenica Genocide Memorial, Sarajevo Memorial to the Children Killed during the 1992-1995 Siege, and Vraca Memorial Park; MOSTAR – The Old Bridge, separation lines during the Croatian-Bosniak conflict, Boulevard and Šantić Street, and Partisan Memorial Cemetery; DUBROVNIK – The Old Town, War Photo Limited – Exhibition centre of war and conflict photojournalism (by Wade Goddard).
